John A. Guzzo, M.D., is a board-certified orthopedic surgeon specializing in sports medicine and general orthopedics, including shoulder care, knee care, orthopedic trauma, and joint replacement surgery.
Dr. Guzzo joined Lakeshore Bone & Joint Institute in 2014 after serving as an orthopedic surgeon in the United States Army. As both an Army major and former collegiate athlete, Dr. Guzzo brings a unique perspective to sports medicine and orthopedic care. His practice focuses on helping patients reduce pain, restore function, and return to the activities, work, and competition that matter most to them.
Dr. Guzzo treats a wide range of orthopedic conditions affecting the shoulder, knee, elbow, and ankle, as well as sports injuries to the knee and shoulder. His background in military medicine and sports medicine has given him extensive experience caring for patients with both acute injuries and ongoing orthopedic concerns. He is committed to providing individualized care that helps patients understand their condition, treatment options, and recovery goals.

Dr. Guzzo received his undergraduate degree from Washington & Jefferson College in Washington, Pennsylvania. He then received his Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Dr. Guzzo completed both his orthopedic surgery internship and orthopedic surgery residency at Madigan Army Medical Center in Tacoma, Washington.
Following his residency training, Dr. Guzzo served as a staff orthopedic surgeon at Winn Army Community Hospital in Fort Stewart, Georgia. His military service as a major in the United States Army, including a deployment in Afghanistan where he was part of a forward surgical team, helped shape his well-rounded approach to orthopedic care and his ability to treat a broad range of injuries and conditions.
Dr. Guzzo is board-certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery and holds a subspecialty certificate in Orthopaedic Sports Medicine. He is also a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, the American Medical Association, and the Society of Military Orthopaedic Surgeons.
Dr. Guzzo serves as a team physician for several local schools and athletic organizations, including Andrean High School, Demotte Christian School, Lake Central High School, Hoosier Fight Club, and more. Through these affiliations, he works with student athletes and their care and coaching teams to support safe, effective treatment and return-to-activity planning.
Outside of medicine, Dr. Guzzo enjoys spending time with his children. His interests include exercise, electronics, and technology.
