Pain Management Treatment Q&A

What is pain management?

Pain management is a medical specialty focused on diagnosing, treating, and reducing pain caused by injuries, chronic conditions, nerve disorders, or musculoskeletal problems. It combines multiple treatment approaches to improve comfort, movement, and overall quality of life.

When should I see a pain management specialist?

You may benefit from pain management care if pain has lasted longer than expected, is interfering with work or daily activities, or has not improved with basic treatments such as rest, medications, or therapy. It can also help patients recovering from surgery or managing chronic conditions.

How is pain treated at LBJI?

Treatment depends on the source and severity of your pain. Many patients improve with medications, therapy, injections, and guided activity modifications. If symptoms persist, advanced interventional procedures may be recommended to target the source of pain more directly.

What are interventional pain procedures?

Interventional pain procedures are minimally invasive treatments designed to reduce pain by targeting specific nerves, joints, or inflamed tissues. These may include epidural injections, nerve blocks, radiofrequency ablation, or other image-guided procedures. They are often used when conservative treatments have not provided enough relief.

Can pain management help me avoid surgery?

In some cases, yes. Pain management treatments can reduce symptoms, improve mobility, and delay or eliminate the need for surgery. If surgery is still necessary, pain management can also play an important role before and after the procedure to support recovery.
