Steven M. Kalisch, Ph.D., H.S.P.P., is a clinical psychologist specializing in pain psychology. He has worked in the field of pain psychology for more than 35 years as a clinician, educator, and researcher, helping patients better understand the connection between chronic pain, stress, thoughts, emotions, behaviors, and daily function.
Dr. Kalisch joined Lakeshore Bone & Joint Institute in 2008 and provides pain psychology services as part of the practice’s commitment to comprehensive patient care. He works closely with patients who are managing chronic pain, injury-related pain, delayed recovery, sleep disruption, and the emotional and functional challenges that can come with long-term pain conditions.

Dr. Kalisch’s approach focuses on education, skill training, and practical coping strategies that help patients move forward physically and psychologically.
He believes that while pain may be a reality in a patient’s life, suffering does not have to define it. Through pain psychology, he helps patients build tools to reduce distress, manage stress, improve sleep, restore confidence, and return to a more active and meaningful life.
Dr. Kalisch received his doctorate in clinical psychology from United States International University in San Diego, California. He completed his pre-doctoral internship and post-doctoral training at Scripps Memorial Hospital in La Jolla, California.
Throughout his career, Dr. Kalisch has held leadership roles in academic medical settings, including Director of Behavioral Medicine Services at the Spine Institute of New England and Department of Orthopaedics at University of Vermont Medical Center, as well as Director of Northwestern Memorial Hospital’s Back and Neck Institute in Chicago.
Outside of medicine, Dr. Kalisch enjoys playing tennis, sailing, spending time outdoors, staying physically active, and watching movies.
