Your Questions Answered

Hand, Wrist, & Elbow Pain Q&A

What is causing my hand, wrist, or elbow pain?

Pain in the upper extremity can be caused by arthritis, nerve compression, tendon inflammation, ligament injuries, fractures, or overuse conditions. A proper diagnosis requires a physical exam and may include imaging or nerve studies.

What other symptoms can occur besides pain?

In addition to pain, you may experience numbness, tingling, weakness, swelling, stiffness, or reduced range of motion. Some conditions may also cause radiating pain, instability, or difficulty with grip and lifting.

How are these conditions treated at LBJI?

Treatment depends on the severity and cause of your condition. Many patients improve with non-surgical options such as therapy, bracing, medications, or injections. More advanced cases may require surgical procedures to restore function and relieve symptoms.

What happens during minimally invasive surgery?

Minimally invasive procedures use small incisions and specialized instruments to treat damaged tissues, nerves, or joints. This approach is designed to reduce pain, shorten recovery time, and improve overall outcomes.

What is nerve decompression surgery?

Nerve decompression surgery relieves pressure on compressed nerves, such as in carpal tunnel syndrome or cubital tunnel syndrome. The goal is to reduce numbness, tingling, and weakness while restoring normal function.
